After nearly nine years of transformative leadership, NCMIC CEO Mike McCoy has announced his retirement, effective at the end of 2025. Since taking the helm in 2017, McCoy has guided NCMIC to remarkable success, cementing its reputation as an industry leader and a pillar of the Des Moines community.
Under McCoy’s leadership, NCMIC has solidified its position as an industry leader, achieving
record earnings while expanding its market share to 60% and increasing assets by $271 million,
surpassing the $1 billion mark. Surplus growth has climbed by $142 million, and the company
has maintained an “A” (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best. Additionally, McCoy spearheaded a
strategic shift that positioned NCMIC’s finance subsidiary as a top revenue driver, with the
company now processing over $2 billion in payments annually—a 40% increase under his
tenure.
Under McCoy’s leadership, NCMIC’s impact has grown far beyond financial metrics. He has
championed a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and community engagement. Through the
launch of the Vision, Mission, and Values framework, McCoy created a unifying roadmap for
employees while fostering an environment that prioritizes collaboration and growth. His
emphasis on leadership development and talent acquisition has reshaped the senior
management team, ensuring NCMIC’s continued success well into the future.
McCoy’s tenure has also seen a significant expansion of NCMIC’s philanthropic efforts. The
company now donates over $1 million annually to more than 150 organizations, reflecting
McCoy’s commitment to giving back to the community. Recognitions such as being named a Top
Workplace in Iowa for seven consecutive years and earning awards from organizations like the
Des Moines Business Record and the Greater Des Moines Partnership highlight the strong culture
he cultivated.
“Since Mike’s arrival, NCMIC has flourished—not just as a company, but as a community
partner,” said Dr. Wayne Wolfson, President of NCMIC Group, Inc. “Mike’s vision and dedication
have elevated NCMIC’s reputation within the chiropractic profession and beyond. His leadership
has left an indelible mark on our organization and our community, setting a standard of
excellence that will guide us for years to come.”
McCoy’s influence extends deeply into the Des Moines community. A strong believer in service,
he has chaired prominent organizations such as the United Way of Central Iowa Annual
Campaign (2024), Bravo Greater Des Moines (2023-2024), the Greater Des Moines Partnership (2023), and ChildServe (2022). His board involvement with institutions like UnityPoint Health
Foundation, Grand View University, and Principal Charity Classic has further amplified his impact.
"NCMIC is such a special place. 'We Take Care of Our Own' isn’t just a motto here—it’s who we
are. Whether it’s supporting our employees, serving our doctors, or giving back to our
community, this company makes an impact in ways that truly matter. Leading NCMIC has been
one of the greatest privileges of my life, and as I look ahead to this next chapter with my wife,
Rhonda, I’ll carry these incredible memories and relationships with me forever.'
The NCMIC Board of Directors has established a search committee to evaluate the organization's
current succession plan. This committee will use the plan as a foundation to select a new CEO,
ensuring a smooth leadership transition.
"I have the utmost confidence in the outstanding team at NCMIC," said Dr. Wayne Wolfson. "Their passion, skill, and steadfast commitment to our mission have been the driving force
behind our achievements. I look forward to seeing them continue this momentum and lead
NCMIC into an even more successful future."
