Clive Urges Safe and Respectful Fireworks Use

CLIVE, IA – The City of Clive’s ordinances have been updated to align with state regulations allowing fireworks to be used throughout the state on July 3 and 4. If residents choose to celebrate July Fourth with fireworks, Clive encourages them to do so safely, respectfully, and at appropriate times and places.

“We want to remind everyone to make safety a priority when using fireworks, especially when disposing of them,” said Clay Garcia, Clive Fire Department Chief. “Discarded fireworks can easily catch fire in a trashcan or container. Soaking used and unspent fireworks in a bucket of water is one of the most important steps to eliminate that risk and keep people and property safe.”

Here are Clive’s fireworks guidelines:

Don’t Light Fireworks on Public Property

  • Fireworks are prohibited at all city parks, facilities, and trails, including the Clive Greenbelt.
  • Citations will be issued to individuals using fireworks on public property.

Use Fireworks Safely and Dispose of Them in a Water Bucket
  • Always keep a bucket of water nearby to soak both spent and unused fireworks for a few hours before discarding.
  • Never hold lit fireworks in your hands or use them indoors.
  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks without close supervision. Sparklers burn at nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and can be very dangerous. Avoid giving sparklers to children under 5 years of age or those who don’t understand the potential risks.

Be Respectful of Your Neighbors
  • Fireworks can be used between 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on July 3, and 9 a.m.-11 p.m. on July 4.
  • Be mindful that fireworks noise can cause a disturbance to pets, families with young children, and individuals who experience PTSD.
  • Do not use fireworks close to buildings, vehicles, and other structures.
  • Always clean up debris left over from fireworks.
